Client: Couple with 2 sets of twins
Property: Double-storey home with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms
Renovation objective: Add storage, storage, and more storage
As a diploma-qualified interior designer and Design Institute of Australia member specialising in functional space planning, this project demonstrates how professional interior design creates cohesive, practical solutions for family living.ge

The Challenge
Yes, this is household with 4 kids under age of 7 years! The clients' primary issue was lack of built-in storage, which they had tried to overcome over years by making several trips to large Swedish store to purchase off-the-shelf shelving and storage cabinets.
The situation:
Ad hoc solutions:
Multiple reactive purchases over time
Off-the-shelf units lacking cohesion
Varied styles creating visual clutter
Cabinets looking dated after heavy use
Lifestyle changes:
All children now in school
Different needs emerging
Previous solutions no longer optimal
Future requirements not addressed
Decision to seek professional help:
The clients realised they needed to invest in storage solutions meeting family's long-term needs, instead of making "trigger" purchases. They decided to engage us for interior design advice.
Their primary objective:
Make house appear tidy, light, and uncluttered through comprehensive storage strategy.
Our Design Process: Understanding Before Designing
At 360 Design Studio, we pride ourselves on providing solutions that not just look good (their form), but are highly practical and functional, whilst being financially viable for clients.
Our consultation approach:
We met the clients in their home and saw each room, asking lots of questions:
Family lifestyle:
Children's hobbies and interests
Sleeping habits and patterns
Daily routines and activities
Future needs as children grow
Functional requirements:
What storage was needed where
What items needed to be accessible vs stored away
How spaces were actually used
What wasn't working in current setup
Design preferences:
Style preferences and inspirations
Existing furniture to retain
Desired cohesive look
Budget parameters
This comprehensive understanding gave us strong foundation for bespoke design recommendations addressing both immediate and long-term needs.
My Diploma in Interior Design (Interior Design Institute, 2024) taught me systematic approaches to space planning and storage design that maximise functionality whilst maintaining aesthetics.
Room-by-Room Storage Solutions
Our interior design advice included storage options and opportunities for almost each room in house:
1. Informal dining area: Banquette seating
The recommendation:
Sell or store dining chairs and replace with banquette seating. This is essentially bench seating with storage underneath.
Benefits:
Seating for family meals maintained
Storage for children's board games and toys
Space-efficient compared to chairs
Built-in look creating cohesion
Easy to clean underneath
Functionality:
Accessible storage for frequently used items
Children can retrieve games independently
Hidden storage reducing visual clutter
Custom-sized to fit exact space
2. Older twins' bedrooms: Multi-functional loft beds
The recommendation:
Replace older twins' single beds with multi-functional loft beds including cupboard for clothes and small study desk.
Benefits:
Frees up existing cupboards for other uses
Creates floor space in small bedrooms
Desk area for homework and activities
Storage, sleeping, and study in one unit
Grows with children through teenage years
Space planning advantage:
Vertical space utilisation
Small bedroom feeling more spacious
Room for play area on freed floor space
Functional zones within single room
3. Younger twins' shared space: Combined bedroom and arts area
The recommendation:
Remove wall between younger twins' bedrooms, allowing them to sleep together in bunk beds whilst rest of space converted into arts and crafts area.
Design rationale:
Current stage:
Younger twins happy sharing sleeping space
Both bedrooms individually too small for activities
Combined space creates proper play zone
Storage solution:
Cabinets running entire length of room below windows
Organised storage for art supplies
Everything accessible at child height
Clear workspace for projects
Future flexibility:
When twins want separate rooms, wall can be reinstated
Cabinets remain functional for either configuration
Bunk beds can become single beds
Arts area converts to second bedroom
Benefits:
Maximises space for current needs
Abundant organised storage
Dedicated creative zone
Adaptable for future changes
4. Linen cupboard from repurposed wardrobe
The recommendation:
Re-purpose one cupboard from older twins' rooms (made redundant by loft beds) into additional storage in first-floor landing.
Sustainability approach:
Rather than disposing of existing cupboard, we creatively repurposed it:
Moved to landing area
Changed doors to match surrounding décor
Created linen storage for upstairs
Reduced waste and cost
As co-founder of Dezinery (Australia's marketplace for recycled and reusable homewares), I specialise in creative reuse preventing waste whilst delivering functional solutions.
5. Bathrooms: Double vanities and storage
The recommendation:
Given size of family, double vanities in each bathroom were essential, adding storage in spades.
Practical benefits:
Two children can use bathroom simultaneously
Morning routine efficiency improved
Storage for each child's toiletries
Reduced family conflict
Accessible storage at appropriate heights
6. Laundry: Vertical storage solution
The situation:
Laundry had been renovated 2 years ago but surprisingly lacked "vertical" storage for tall items like vacuum cleaner and ironing board.
The creative solution:
Remove one set of cabinets below benchtop and replace with tall cupboard from second older twin's room (also made redundant by loft bed).
Feasibility:
Benchtop was laminate (easily shortened)
Good carpenter could re-fit benchtop
Cupboard height perfect for storage needs
Another example of creative reuse
Door options provided:
We gave clients several choices for repurposed cupboard door:
Paint to match other laundry cabinetry (cohesive look)
Chalk or magnetic paint (kids' creativity zone)
Striking bright colour (unique feature)
This demonstrates how professional design provides options empowering client decisions.
Phased Implementation Approach
The clients were surprised and grateful to see range of options we provided. They realised they didn't have to make changes and upgrades in one go, rather in phases as budget permitted.
Our recommendation:
Whilst they were keen to avail of our Project Management service, we suggested this service was better suited for renovations where:
Number of trades require management
Project must be completed in specified timeframe
Coordination complexity justifies professional oversight
For this project:
Since they only needed single trade (carpenter/joiner), they could work directly with them as funds permitted.
Our continued support:
We provided ongoing assistance by:
Putting them in touch with our carpenter
Having worked with us previously, he quickly understood our drawings
Zoom meeting to clarify questions
Checking in periodically on progress
This flexible approach demonstrates how professional design services can adapt to client circumstances and budget constraints.
