Client: Retired couple
Property: Apartment with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Renovation objective: Refresh and update apartment which had been rented out for decade, add features to enable couple to live comfortably in it for as long as possible
As a diploma-qualified interior designer and Design Institute of Australia member, this project demonstrates how professional design addresses both immediate aesthetic goals and long-term accessibility needs.

The Client Journey
After lifetime of work, bringing up family, and travelling world, this couple had recently sold their large family home and purchased apartment closer to city. Their aim was to enjoy city's theatre and fine dining options whilst having ability to simply lock up and travel overseas to visit children.
Initial consultation:
When we met couple for first time in their new apartment, we started by asking lots of questions to better understand their current and future needs.
Questions we asked:
Space usage:
How did they want to use second bedroom?
How often did they actually have guests staying over?
Need for privacy at apartment entrance?
Daily routines and activities?
Future planning:
Health considerations and mobility needs
Plans for aging in place
Accessibility requirements now and later
Maintenance preferences
Design preferences:
Style inspiration and examples
Colours and materials they loved
What dated apartment for them
Vision for renovated space
My Diploma in Interior Design (Interior Design Institute, 2024) taught me importance of understanding not just current needs but anticipating future requirements, particularly for clients planning to age in place.
Assessing the Property
Positive features:
In our view, apartment had:
Lovely natural light throughout
High ceilings creating spacious feel
Good bones and functional layout
Solid structure and well-maintained building
Issues to address:
Dated features:
Arches and other decorative elements dating apartment
Tired "beige" palette not reflecting couple's personalities
Lack of character and individuality
Bathroom challenges:
Mosaic flooring difficult to clean
Not accessible for future mobility aids
Standard fixtures without safety features
Rental neglect:
Apartment looking tired after decade of tenants
Lack of personal touches
General wear requiring refresh

Professional oversight throughout
Standards maintained in their absence

Room-by-Room Solutions
1. Flooring: Level and seamless
Living, dining, kitchen:
Levelled floors before laying new timber floorboards
Critical for minimising tripping hazards
Facilitates use of walking aids/wheelchair in future
Creates seamless flow throughout main areas
Bathrooms:
Used LVT (luxury vinyl tiles) in similar pattern to floorboards
Gives apartment seamless and cohesive feel
Waterproof and low-maintenance
Non-slip surface for safety
Easy to clean compared to mosaic
Accessibility benefit:
Level floors throughout enable:
Walker or wheelchair navigation
Reduced fall risk
Future-proofing for mobility changes
Cleaning robot operation (more on this later)
2. Bathrooms: Safe and stylish
Updates included:
Fixtures and fittings:
New shower screens improving accessibility
Modern vanities with better storage
Contemporary fixtures and hardware
Improved lighting for aging eyes
Safety features:
Hand rails minimising fall risk
Strategically placed meeting AS1428 standards
Stylish design not institutional-looking
Grab bars in shower and near toilet
Door modifications:
Widened doors facilitating wheelchair/walker access
Pocket door options where appropriate
Lever handles easier for arthritic hands
Future-proofing:
These modifications enable couple to:
Age safely in place
Maintain independence longer
Avoid future costly retrofitting
Have peace of mind about long-term viability
As Design Institute of Australia member, I maintain current knowledge of Australian accessibility standards (AS1428) ensuring compliant, functional solutions.
3. Entrance: Privacy and function
The solution:
Added privacy by installing simple screen using timber battens.
Integrated features:
Bench at base:
Seating for removing shoes
Shelves below for shoe storage
Convenient drop zone for bags and keys
Hooks on battens:
Hats, scarves, coats hanging
Accessible without bending
Keeps entrance tidy
Visitors can hang belongings
Benefits:
Privacy from main living area
Functional storage in small footprint
Welcoming entrance experience
Natural material adding warmth
4. Laundry: Robot-ready storage
The creative solution:
Removed bottom shelf from one cabinet and added power point for robot floor cleaner.
Why this works:
All floors now level enabling robot operation
Handy charging station out of sight
Reduces physical cleaning burden
Future-proofing for reduced mobility
This demonstrates how professional design sees opportunities for integrating modern technology into functional design.
5. Paint: Fresh canvas
The transformation:
Painting all walls and ceiling instantly refreshed whole apartment.
Colour selection:
Warm white serving as backdrop
Showcasing couple's extensive art collection
Contemporary yet timeless
Light-reflecting enhancing natural light
Impact:
Completely transformed dated beige feel
Created gallery-like atmosphere
Reflected couple's sophisticated taste
Made space feel larger and brighter
6. Lighting: The jewellery
The last thing to complete renovation was adding "jewellery" through new light fixtures and pendants.
Lighting strategy:
Ambient lighting:
Recessed ceiling lights providing general illumination
Appropriate lux levels for aging eyes
Even distribution eliminating dark corners
Task lighting:
Reading lights in living areas
Under-cabinet lighting in kitchen
Vanity lighting in bathrooms
Adjustable for different activities
Accent lighting:
Feature pendants adding character
Highlighting art collection
Creating warmth and atmosphere
Dimmable for mood setting
Comprehensive lighting design ensures space looks its best and functions well day or night.

As co-founder of Dezinery (Australia's marketplace for recycled and reusable homewares), I incorporated sustainable principles throughout:

Kept kitchen cabinetry, updating only doors and hardware
Retained quality existing furniture through reupholstery
Preserved original building features where appropriate
Energy efficiency:
LED lighting throughout apartment
Energy-efficient appliances
Improved window treatments for thermal performance
Healthy indoor environment:
Low-VOC paints throughout
Natural materials where appropriate
Improved ventilation in bathrooms
Longevity:

Project Management Excellence
Pre-departure preparation:

Visualise every aspect of renovation
Provide detailed feedback
Make changes before construction
Approve all decisions before departure
Their feedback was critical as they'd be overseas during construction phase.
Construction coordination:
As soon as we received approval, we:
Started planning and preparing
Scheduled all trades through Trade & Materials Schedule
Ordered all materials
Commenced work day after they left
Daily site management:
During construction, we:
Visited site daily as their eyes and ears
Resolved issues immediately
Coordinated between trades
Ensured quality standards
Maintained project schedule
Communication:
Regular updates to clients overseas:
Progress photos and videos
Issue resolution reporting
Budget tracking
Timeline confirmation

What impressed them most:
Attention to detail:
Every element considered thoughtfully
Spaces working intuitively
Quality evident throughout
Cohesive design from entrance to bedrooms
Future-proofing:
Accessibility features integrated beautifully
Aging-in-place capability
Reduced maintenance burden
Technology integration for convenience
Personal touches:
