Client: Couple with teenage son and daughter
Property: Double-storey home with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Renovation objective: Provide each child with ensuite bathroom by converting family bathroom located between both bedrooms
As a diploma-qualified interior designer and Design Institute of Australia member, I've managed numerous bathroom renovations. This project demonstrates how comprehensive interior design and professional Project Management deliver functional, beautiful spaces on tight timelines.

The Challenge
The clients contacted us for initial consultation in their home. They gave us a tour of space to be converted and advised us of functional requirements.
Key requirements:
Functionality:
Maximising storage in both ensuites
Including bath for elder daughter
Ensuring adequate space for daily routines
Timeline:
Complete as quickly as possible
Only one other bathroom for whole family during renovation
Upcoming HSC exams for younger son requiring minimal disruption
Layout complexity:
It wasn't as simple as drawing line down middle given:
Size constraints of original bathroom
Existing layout with large windows on one side
Functional requirements to be met
Door locations and floor space requirements
Design constraints:
Window placement:
Large windows on one side preventing showers, vanities, and mirrors underneath
Natural light distribution between both ensuites
Privacy considerations
Door access:
Floor space required for new doors opening into each ensuite
Circulation space meeting Australian standards
Access from each bedroom
Bathtub requirement:
Daughter's ensuite needed bathtub
Space allocation for tub plus shower
Plumbing considerations
Our Solution: Comprehensive Interior Design
The clients initially engaged us for interior design services but soon expanded our brief to include Project Management for implementation.
Benefits of professional interior design:
1. Multiple layout options
Clients were able to see options on how best to divide space rather than assuming one obvious solution.
We provided:
Floor plans showing different configurations
Pros and cons of each option
Impact on functionality and storage
Cost implications of alternatives
2. Optimal space division
Final layout addressed all constraints:
Showers, vanities, and mirrors positioned away from windows
Floor space retained for door openings and circulation
Bathtub fitted in daughter's ensuite
Both ensuites receiving natural light
Storage maximised in both spaces
3. Detailed visualisation
Our 3D drawings and mood board helped them visualise and "walk through" both new ensuites in great detail.
What visualisation prevented:
Costly rework during construction
Changes mid-project extending timeline
Surprises when construction completed
Budget blowouts from modifications
This was essential given tight timeline requirement.
4. Smart storage solutions
We added storage to make use of every spare inch:
Custom vanities with internal organisation
Built-in cabinetry fitted to exact dimensions
Recessed shelving in shower areas
Towel storage integrated into design
Medicine cabinets with mirrors
5. Unexpected features
We noticed laundry was located directly below space and added laundry chute - the client's favourite feature!
This demonstrates value of professional observation and creative problem-solving beyond client's initial requirements.
My Diploma in Interior Design (Interior Design Institute, 2024) taught me systematic space planning methodology and creative storage solutions that maximise functionality.
Project Management Excellence
As soon as design outputs were reviewed and approved, we began working on Trade & Materials Schedule (TMS) to prepare for construction phase.
Trade & Materials Schedule components:
Comprehensive scope:
Every task to be completed by each trade (plumber, electrician, tiler, carpenter, waterproofer)
All key furniture and fittings specified
Material specifications detailed
Quantities calculated precisely
Accurate quoting:
TMS sent to our vetted trades team
Quotes based on complete scope
No ambiguity or missing items
Accurate budget certainty
Realistic scheduling:
Prepared schedule for each day of project
Dependencies and sequencing mapped
Buffers included for coordination
Material delivery coordination
Material procurement:
Trade discount benefits:
Ordered all materials ourselves
Passed back 100% trade discounts to clients
Added significant amount back to project budget
Enabled higher quality selections within budget
COVID-related challenges:
Despite COVID-related supply delays
Materials mostly delivered on schedule
Proactive communication with suppliers
Alternative options arranged when necessary
Construction Phase Management
Daily site presence:
Trades were on site every day to keep project moving per schedule. Our renovation consultant visited daily to:
Ensure work progressing per schedule
Resolve issues immediately
Coordinate between trades
Verify quality standards
Manage material deliveries
Issue resolution:
Small leak uncovered whilst demolishing floor tiles required remediation. We:
Identified issue immediately
Explained implications to clients
Obtained quote for remediation
Adjusted schedule accordingly
Ensured proper repair before proceeding
This proactive management prevented:
Hidden water damage causing future problems
Failed building inspection
Costly rework after completion
Budget certainty:
No cost blowouts occurred because:
Scope of work comprehensively defined in TMS
All work included in original quotes
Changes documented with price implications
Only unexpected cost was leak remediation
All invoices matched quotes
Timeline achievement:
Project completed on schedule despite:
COVID-related material delays
Unexpected leak requiring remediation
Family using only one bathroom during work
HSC exam timeline pressure
This required:
Daily on-site management
Proactive problem-solving
Professional trade coordination
Clear communication with family
Sustainable Approach
As co-founder of Dezinery (Australia's marketplace for recycled and reusable homewares), I incorporated sustainable principles where appropriate:
Waste reduction:
Salvaged materials from demolition for potential reuse
Donated usable fixtures to recycling organisation
Proper disposal of materials unsuitable for reuse
Energy efficiency:
LED lighting throughout both ensuites
Energy Star-rated exhaust fans
Water-efficient fixtures (WELS 4-star minimum)
Healthy indoor environment:
Low-VOC paints and sealants
Proper ventilation design
Non-toxic grout and adhesives
Results and Client Satisfaction
Functional outcomes:
Daughter's ensuite:
Bathtub as requested
Adequate storage for toiletries and towels
Natural light from existing windows
Privacy from street and brother's ensuite
Son's ensuite:
Spacious shower meeting his needs
Storage for teenage boy's requirements
Natural light appropriate for morning routine
Functional layout supporting daily use
Both ensuites:
Modern fixtures and finishes
Cohesive design reflecting family style
Building code compliant
Professional quality throughout
Client feedback:
The clients were so satisfied they:
Asked us to design and renovate their second bathroom and laundry
Referred us to close friends contemplating renovation
Became advocates for our services
Being relatively new and small business, such referrals mean the world to us, and we're extremely grateful for our clients' trust and advocacy.
